ANAHEIM - Angels were heading into this game with a 3-game winning streak with a chance to sweep the Cardinals in a 3-game series, already having won the series. However, despite outhitting the Cardinals, the Angels lost in a 1-0 pitching duel loss on Wednesday afternoon.

The Angels (41-62), had seven hits but were unable to cash any runs in with runners in scoring position (going 0-6 with RISP).

Reid Detmers pitched well in this one, pitching 5⅓ innings. Throughout the first four innings, Detmers was doing well, just allowing one hit while getting four strikeouts and no walks.

However in the 5th inning, Detmers started to lose control as he walked the first two hitters of the inning while his velocity dipped a bit. However, he was able to get through the 5th inning thanks to third baseman Vaughn Grissom who got a double play.

“The first couple innings felt really good and then the longer I stayed out there, obviously, the more tired I got,” Detmers said. “It didn’t really feel like my like stuff felt bad. It was just velocity was down a little bit. Stuff felt really good actually. It is what it is.” (Jeff Fletcher, OCR)

Detmers came back into the 6th inning and struck out the first hitter. However, he ended up giving up a solo-homerun to JJ Wetherholt when he threw a 92 mph fastball over the middle.

Suzuki pulled Detmers immediately following the homerun, throwing 85 pitches total in his outing. José Fermin, Samy Netera Jr., Mitch Farris, and Kirby Yates pitched the rest of the game, not allowing any more damage.

However JJ Wetherholt's solo-homerun ended up being the game winning run as the Angels were shutout through 9 innings.

The Angels' offense best chance to score was in the 3rd inning when Zach Neto hit a double, and then Mike Trout got hit by a pitch. However, Nolan Schanuel hit a pop-up, and then Vaughn Grissom struck out.

Other opportunities were in the 5th inning, where Trout was at first base and Schanuel hit a line drive directly at first baseman Alec Burleson, who stepped on the bag to end the inning with a double play.

In the 9th inning, Nolan Schanuel and Wade Meckler both took walks after Vaughn Grissom struck out swinging to start the inning. However, Oswald Peraza and Josh Lowe both struck out to end the game.

Angels lost, 1-0.

Personal Thoughts:

Very frustrating loss today in such a sweepable series. Angels still won the series which was nice at the very least, taking the first 2 out of 3. I thought not having Jorge Soler in the lineup at all would result in runs, however that wasn't the case at all. I'm so incredibly sick of seeing Jorge Soler hit cleanup - please stop Kurt Suzuki.

Reid Detmers still continues to lack run support at home, and this could've been the final game he pitches as an Angel if he gets traded before the trade deadline. If the Angels decide to wait until closer to the trade deadline, Reid Detmers is scheduled to pitch Tuesday, July 28th against the Astros at Angel Stadium.

Would love to see Reid Detmers get one last chance to win a game at home this year, he deserves it with all the work he's put in this year.
